There are also certain patterns and markings that a ferret can have with his color. For example, a sable can be a sable mitt if he has a bib and his feet are all white. That is a pattern. Here are some common patterns: mitt, badger, blaze, hooded, roan, siamese or pointed patterened, panda, and shetland. A marking would be for example a sable bib, which would mean that the ferret has only a bib and no white feet, which is why he couldn't be a sable mitt. Some common markings include white tips at the tail, bibs, white feet, and rings around the eyes.Common Color Combinations: Sable, Silver, Silver Mitt, Sable Panda, Dark Sable, Chocolate Sable, Albino, DEW, and Hooded Sable.
Believe it or not, some ferrets do actually change colors. Below are pictures of "Zach," who changed from a sable panda, to a very, very, light silver.
DESCRIPTION OF COLORS & PATTERNS
The Two Types of Ferret Hairs - Ferrets have two types of fur. Guardhairs are the hairs that show up the most on a ferret. They are also the longest. The Undercoat of a ferret is the fur underneath the guardhairs. The undercoat protects the ferret from cold.
THE FOUR BASIC COLORS
Sable:The guardhairs are dark in color, ranging from darkest brown to black. The undercoat on the neck, belly, back is cream colored, and it may show through. The tail and legs are the same color as the body, but with no undercoat. The mask is a full band across their eyes.
Silver: There are several different silver patterns. Some silvers have guardhairs that are white and silverey everywhere on the body, and some silvers are sometimes confused with DEWS because some silvers have all white guardhairs everywhere except their tail, which has only a few silver guardhairs. The silver ferret lacks a full mask and usually only has a few smudges of silver around the eyes.
Badger or Shetland:This pattern usually has smudges around the eyes instead of a mask. All feet are white or tipped with white, they have white bibs, and sometimes the knees are white also. This type of ferret is prone to deafness.
Siamese or Pointed Patterned:This pattern refers to the ferret that has a V shaped mask that is darker or lighter than the rest of the body. This ferret also has a line of color running through the length of the underside, this is called a zipper.
